8-Day Great Migration Safari

The annual Great Migration is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on Earth. Each year, more than a million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, move across the vast ecosystem of Serengeti National Park in search of fresh grazing.

This 8-day safari is designed specifically to maximize opportunities to witness the migration, while also exploring other iconic wildlife destinations including the remarkable Ngorongoro Crater.

Because the migration moves throughout the year, the itinerary can be adjusted to follow the herds — whether they are calving in the southern Serengeti, crossing crocodile-infested rivers in the north, or roaming the central plains.

Along the way, travelers experience dramatic landscapes, exceptional wildlife encounters, and comfortable safari lodges located within prime viewing areas.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Arusha

Your safari begins upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. After clearing customs, you will be greeted by your safari guide and transferred to your lodge in the nearby town of Arusha.

Arusha serves as the main gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and lies at the foot of Mount Meru. The town is surrounded by coffee plantations and green hills, providing a pleasant setting to rest before beginning your safari adventure.

In the evening, your guide will conduct a short safari briefing outlining the route, wildlife expectations, and daily schedule.

Accommodation: Lodge in Arusha.

Day 2 – Journey to the Serengeti

After breakfast, you depart Arusha and begin the journey toward the legendary Serengeti National Park.

The route climbs into the lush highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before descending onto the immense Serengeti plains. The scenery gradually transforms from forested hills to open grassland stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

Your first afternoon game drive begins shortly after entering the park. Large herds of wildebeest and zebras are commonly seen grazing across the plains, while predators such as lions and hyenas patrol the area.

Accommodation: Serengeti safari lodge or tented camp.

Day 3 – Central Serengeti Safari

Today is spent exploring the wildlife-rich central Serengeti, particularly the Seronera Valley region. This area is known for its year-round water sources and high concentration of animals.

Morning and afternoon game drives provide opportunities to observe predator behavior, including lions resting beneath acacia trees and cheetahs scanning the plains for prey.

Depending on the season, your guide will also track the movements of migrating herds across the ecosystem.

Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or camp.

Day 4 – Migration Tracking in the Serengeti

The migration is constantly moving across the Serengeti ecosystem. Today’s safari focuses on locating and following the herds.

During migration season, the plains can appear alive with animals as thousands of wildebeest and zebras move across the landscape in search of fresh grass. This concentration of prey also attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas.

Your guide will use experience and local knowledge to position the vehicle in areas with the highest likelihood of wildlife activity.

Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or camp.

Day 5 – Northern Serengeti Exploration

Today you travel toward the northern Serengeti, a region famous for dramatic river crossings during certain months of the migration.

The rivers here are home to large Nile crocodiles that lie in wait for animals attempting to cross. When the herds gather along the banks, the tension builds as thousands of animals prepare to plunge into the water.

Even outside river crossing season, the northern Serengeti remains an exceptional wildlife destination with fewer visitors and beautiful rolling landscapes.

Accommodation: Northern Serengeti tented camp.

Day 6 – Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands

After a morning game drive, you depart the Serengeti and begin traveling toward the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The journey provides scenic views across volcanic terrain and Maasai pastoral lands. By afternoon, you arrive at your lodge situated along the rim of the massive Ngorongoro Crater.

From this vantage point, the view across the crater floor reveals a vast natural amphitheater teeming with wildlife.

Accommodation: Crater rim lodge.

Day 7 – Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Early in the morning, you descend nearly 600 meters into the famous Ngorongoro Crater.

This enormous volcanic caldera supports a dense population of wildlife within a relatively small area, making it one of the best places in Africa to observe animals up close.

The crater floor is home to lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, hyenas, and numerous antelope species. It is also one of the few locations in Tanzania where the endangered black rhinoceros can sometimes be seen.

After a full day exploring the crater, you return to your lodge.

Accommodation: Lodge near Karatu.

Day 8 – Return to Arusha

After breakfast, you begin the return journey to Arusha.

Depending on your departure schedule, you may visit local craft markets or enjoy a relaxing lunch before transferring to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.

Many travelers choose to extend their safari with a beach holiday on Zanzibar Island.
